Art department seeks funding for gallery

After two decades, MCC is still waiting for an art gallery.
Bond elections are coming up in November and the art department is trying to get funding for an art gallery that will be attached to the Theatre Outback. It will be a chance for students, faculty and known artists from around the country to exhibit their talent in art. Finding space for the art gallery has not been a problem. The difficulty has been in the funding.
With the largest art program in the district, enrolling about 2000 students every semester, MCC is the only campus in the district lacking an art gallery. An art gallery would serve many purposes, ranging from year-round art displays to art shows in the spring and fall. It would also be available for assignments from other classes.
“ Students need a place where the can go and experience looking at art work in a gallery,” said Sarah Capawana, art professor.
Even if the bond elections are passed this year, construction won’t begin until 2006.
