W. Scott Crowley was named Maricopa Community College Governing Board member Feb. 18 by Superintendent Sandra E. Dowling. Crowley will serve in Precinct 4, which represents the West Valley, including Glendale and Estrella Community Colleges. Crowley fills the position that was left empty after board member Gene Eastin passed away in January.
After public notice was provided of the position, seven community members, including Crowley, sought formal appointment.
Crowley feels his education in the community college system has enabled him to achieve his goals and to be a positive influence in the community, giving back as a firefighter.
“ I saw it as an opportunity to give back to the community college system that has given so much to me,” said Crowley.
Crowley, 30, is a Phoenix firefighter and paramedic. Prior to his appointment, Crowley was an adjunct faculty member at Phoenix College, teaching emergency medical yechnician and basic paramedic classes.
Crowley entered the military after graduating from high school and upon his return entered the Maricopa Community College system, earning his associate’s degree in fire science from Phoenix College in 1998.
Dowling hopes Crowley’s youth will add a new dimension to the board, making the gap between students, staff, and administration smaller.
Crowley feels he will be able to aid students in getting their voices heard because it wasn’t long ago that he was in the community college system and he understands the needs of students.
“ There are a lot of student issues that aren’t being heard and I want to listen,” Crowley said.
Crowley said he would like to see more partnerships with private corporations to offset the costs of education. He understands the rising cost of education, but feels the pending tuition increase is “absolutely ridiculous” and that students should not bear all of the burden.
Governing Board members serve for six years; Crowley is finishing the remainder of Eastin’s term, which will expire at the end of the year. Crowley is planning to run in the November election in order to keep his seat.
Crowley said he feels one of the keys to his job is student participation. He welcomes student groups that feel that they are not being heard or need assistance getting ideas conveyed to the board to contact him.
“ I would like to think that I’m approachable by students at all campuses. That’s what my job is all about,” saud Crowley.
Crowley goes into the position with enthusiasm and hope about what he can bring to the board.
“ I’m very excited about the position and I am honored to be able to serve the community and the students of Maricopa Community Colleges,” said Crowley.
