MCC softball falls twice to Gauchos
Mike Helm
Contributing Writer

The Thunderbirds softball team dropped a pair of games to Glendale Community College Feb. 28.
Two low-scoring affairs on Saturday featured games mostly dominated by the pitching for both teams.
The first game of the double-header featured pitcher Laura Chomokos, who went all seven innings allowing only one run. As would be the case throughout the day, the pitching kept the Thunderbirds in the game until the end, but the offense could not sustain a rally against an equally dominant Glendale pitcher.
The game remained scoreless until Glendale scored what would later be the deciding run in the fourth inning. The Thunderbirds threatened in the sixth inning after back-to-back singles by Sheaya Blanton and Stacy Prevost and again in the seventh when Brooke Soloman doubled to lead off the inning. The Thunderbirds were unable to capitalize in either inning, leaving three runners stranded.
Chomokos kept the Glendale team off balance nearly the entire game and was able to hold off the opposing team when they threatened to extend their lead in the fifth inning.
The Thunderbirds could not capitalize on the early double by Soloman and the game ended with Glendale prevailing 1-0.
The second game was a low scoring as well, and again the pitching by both teams kept the game close until the end. Soloman took the mound for the Thunderbirds and breezed through the first inning, but ran into trouble in the second after allowing a walk and two hits, which provided the first run for the Glendale team. After hitting a batter, Soloman was able to get the next two batters out to end the inning.
Chomokos doubled in the third and Soloman and Chelsea Mehrhoff both singled in the fourth, but neither inning provided the Thunderbirds with any runs as they left two runners stranded in the fourth.
It was in the fifth inning when the Thunderbirds finally got on the board. Kristan Kellogg led off the inning with a single and was brought home on a triple by Prevost. The Thunderbirds were threatening to score more runs, but a big inning was prevented when the Glendale shortstop made a great diving catch on a ball hit sharply by Chris Pesqueira.
Glendale came back in their half of the fifth with two runs on a pair of back-to-back doubles which ended a good pitching performance by Soloman. Chomokos was brought in to relieve Soloman and allowed a single which provided Glendale their second run of the inning and third of the game.
The Thunderbirds fought back in the sixth inning when Mehrhoff singled and was brought in on a double by Lisa Colores. Again the Thunderbirds were threatening more runs when the Glendale third baseman made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning. The Thunderbirds were hitting the ball sharply throughout the second game but could not seem to find any gaps or overcome the strong Glendale defense.
The Thunderbirds did not score in the seventh, which ended the game with Glendale prevailing 3-2.
