Travel agencies feel
pinch from spring break

Spring break is one the most anticipated events in a college student’s
life.
Most plans for the weeklong vacation start months in advance. Booking
reservations at hotels in some of the world’s most beautiful
places usually takes top priority.
Mexico held many destinations for spring break travelers this year.
Cancun is known for its sandy white beaches and clear blue skies,
Cabo is renowned for its lavish hotels and ocean views, and Rocky
Point is the favorite among many Arizona students.
With only a short car ride and a few hundred dollars, many travelers
engaged in an entire week of entertainment.
“I went to Rocky Point with only $250 and still came back
with change,” said student Jaime Leon. Rocky Point is popular
for its cheap drinks, taco stands and vocal locals, and it appeals
to many young students because the legal age for consuming alcohol
is 18.
Some students decided to use a travel agency to ensure safety and
a more organized trip. However, according to Felice Freed, owner
of Pepper Travels, not many students booked reservations this year.
“America West now travels nonstop to Rocky Point, so that
type of business has declined a great bit,” said Freed.
Even over recent years, travelers in Arizona have slowed in making
reservations. “Mexico is a very popular spot, but most of
my bookings are for families. The biggest this break was Costa Rica,”
said Freed.
She added that some Northern Arizona University students had called
regarding reservations to Las Vegas but cancelled at the last minute
and chose to drive instead. “Las Vegas is a heavily requested
vacation spot as well,” she said.
The ringing of the slots and the glimmer of the Strip tempt many
students.
“I stayed at New York, NewYork (casino) and had gotten really
drunk and thought I got a tattoo but it was only henna,” said
student Adrian Mahawaduge.
Other students decided to stay home and get some much-needed sleep
or catch up on work and errands.
“I just stayed home with friends and family because I really
didn’t have any money,” said student Jessica Brewer.
