Safe program promotes education
through service
Sheila Snodgrass
Mesa Legend
On March 26, a national training team visited MCC to promote programs
that support the need for community involvement. The team spoke about
Supporting Actions for Engagement, which is also called SAFE. The SAFE
program works to get young people involved in community activities and
to ensure preparedness for unintended incidents.
The SAFE trainers were brought to campus in conjunction with service-learning
on MCC’s campus.
Service-learning focuses on how to get students involved in their community
and the benefits with civic participation.
A major priority of both programs is to get students to choose public
service.
College isn’t just about sitting in a classroom; there is a new
way to learn, according to Larry Thacker, MCC director of EMT and fire
science and the lead coordinator of SAFE.
“Service-learning is a new way to teach by getting people involved
in your community,” Thacker said.
Thacker said MCC is very fortunate to have an entire office dedicated
to service-learning, led by Duane Oaks, faculty director.
He also said community colleges have an obligation to the community and
the students they serve to open a dialogue about service-learning, social
responsibility and the values of volunteerism.
Participants in the day-long workshop spent time in the afternoon creating
solutions to common problems.
SAFE was created to give students the resources to make a difference and
get the best education possible by learning in an interactive environment.
Information about service-learning can be found in the Service-Learning
office, which is located in the Kirk Center, on the MCC Service-Learning
website at http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/services/servicelearning/ or by
