Black and white photographs, charcoal drawings, 3D art media, ceramics and oil paintings greeted observers attending the annual MCC Student Art Show.
One hundred forty students participated and 33 came away with cash awards ranging from $300 to $50. Participants were selected by faculty or by fellow students.
Best of Show was awarded to Rebecca Tibbetts for her 24” x 30” oil painting titled, “Scott’s Garden.” Anja Jarman was given the Presidential Purchase award for her conte and wax pencil drawing. Jarman’s drawing will become a permanent work of the president’s collection and permanently displayed on campus.
The MCC Art Department has sponsored student art exhibits for the past fifteen years. Department Chairperson, Sarah Capawana credits faculty for their many contributions including publicity, awards and set-up. They transformed the Navajo room into an art gallery by bringing in panels, lighting and pedestals to display the students work.
Three jurors were selected from the community to judge the entries. They are, Marie Navarre a local artist and Photography instructor of at CGCC, Patty Haberman, Curator of the Mesa Arts Center and Crista Coultier, Director of Segura Publishing and Gallery of Mesa.
The awards ceremony included a welcome by Dr. Gail Mee, Dean of Instruction, and a digital presentation highlighting the winners work presented by faculty member Cindy Greening. Guest speaker, Rob Schultz, Administrator of the Mesa Arts Center, shared his insight of the importance of the arts in downtown Mesa. MCC President, Larry Christiansen was also present at the awards ceremony.
Awards recipient, Tobias Fruge’ was amazed that his drawing actually won. He used a scribble drawing technique for his charcoal sketch that he described as a surreal abstract.
Another student, April Henry, was surprised and complimented that her black and white photograph titled “Tulips” was selected by her instructor. She has enjoyed the personal nature of her community college experience and the faculty taking individual interest in students.
MCC student, Sarah Brown designed the postcard mailer promoting the event to the community. It displayed the 2003 Best of Show and Presidential Purchase award winners work.
