Fire program gets new wheels

The Mesa Fire Department donated a fire truck to the MCC Fire Academy in February in the first such donation to the college and the second by the city of Mesa.
The truck, which will be used in the training of the students in the fire program at MCC, was one of two the fire department had in reserve.
“The mechanics actually put in a lot of hours working on the truck to make sure it was running well. They made sure everything was working for use in the training,” said Mary Cameli, deputy chief of the Mesa Fire Department.
The second truck was donated to the East Valley Institute of Technology for use in their program. Cameli said the Mesa Fire Department has a special interest in making MCC the recipient of one of the trucks.
The truck was received fully functional and includes all the major amenities of trucks used by the city. This is important, because these trucks will be vital in the training of the students at MCC.
The MCC Fire Academy has a good relationship with the Mesa Fire Department. MCC sends students to volunteer time in the department through the connector program MCC has with Mesa.
The city also sends some of its firefighters over to the school to instruct classes and some firefighters take classes at MCC to finish training they need in certain areas.
“A lot of firefighters that we have now came from the program at MCC and it is important to keep the relationship running. It is good for the students to get familiar with equipment that they will be using when they join a department,” Cameli said.
