On April 21, MCC’s communications department held Careers
in Communications in the library. The program included speakers
from various fields that have graduated with communications degrees.
The guest speaker list consisted of Tempe Mayor Neil Guiliano, Vicky
Nguyen of Fox 10 News, Nikki Mancuso of the University of Phoenix
and Geraldo E. de los Santos from the League for Innovation. The
moderator was Bart Davis of the Salt River Project.
The seminar was organized by Jim Mancuso and Susan Olson of the
communications department.
“Jim and I wanted to something that would show students what
they can do in communications; we thought this was the way to go,”
Olson said.
“I feel it’s our duty to make sure that students are
aware of their career options and how communications can help,”
Olson said.
The panel the speakers emphasized the importance of internships.
Nguyen told students “the most valuable experience you can
get in this field is internships at various media outlets; take
advantage of getting to know people. Networking is a very valuable
skill to acquire.”
Students were also able to learn about paths the speakers took to
achieve their goals as well as obstacles they might face.
