Semester’s end brings summer employment

Jennifer McRae
Mesa Legend

As the last few weeks of this semester dwindle down, students are becoming more aware that school is out for the summer.
Although some students may be participating in summer school sessions, most look forward to sleeping in, lounging around the pool, or maybe taking a road trip with some friends.
The next thing that comes to mind is how to afford all of this.
A flashback of someone nagging to “Get a Job!!” pops into mind and then the dreadful thought of a summer job haunts the unemployed.
Each year students face the problem of finding a summer job that is some what entertaining and repetitive, but is fun and suitable for their needs.
As Arizona becomes a booming state, job availability may become a little scarce, however here are a few ideas to start out with.
Arizona summers can be extremely warm so what better idea is there than to spend it in the water.
Water parks such as Golfland/Sunsplash and Big Surf offer summer jobs to suit nearly anyone.
Opportunities include life guarding, food service, and working at the golf counter or bumper boats.
Golfland assistant Rochelle Rieck, explained that applications can be filled out at the Golfland offices and will then be distributed to the desired department.
If staying out of the heat is a factor, heading up to the Grand Canyon could be another option.
Job and volunteer opportunities are available for those who have some experience in geology.
Jon Sudar, park volunteer coordinator, explained that by visiting the park’s web site www.volunteer.gov/gov, students can access a listing of jobs.
For the sports fanatics out there, Bank One Ballpark offers an assortment of jobs ranging from suite hosts to landscape work.
The application process can begin by calling the official Bank One Ballpark line at 602-462-6000. Listen for the job opportunity extension to talk to the human resources department.
For those who plan to stay indoors, Fiesta Mall is currently looking for jobs to fill. Listings are posted on their official website: www.shopfiesta.com/jobopportunities.
If these ideas don’t offer the ideal summer job, then MCC offers a website to find the perfect job for each student.
Start by accessing the MCC website, www.maricopa.edu, and scan over to the right column where the career services link is located.
Click the link then find the “Find a job” link.
This will direct students to the website that offers hundreds of jobs.
Suzanne Hipps, a career services counselor at MCC said, “We direct most students to this web site because it helps them narrow down exactly what they are looking for.”
She continued to explain that most of the jobs around campus are for work study programs, so it is competitive to get in.
Summer jobs shouldn’t be a drag, but should be a fun way for students to get out of the house and maybe get a little fresh air.
Although it is sometimes tough to find the right one, finding a well suited job is key.
