While many students wondered why a moon bounce was in the center courtyard of the school, participating clubs of the annual Spring Bash sat at their designated booths, hoping to catch the eye of non-members.
“The Spring Bash is a time for all the MCC clubs to get together and fundraise and advertise what (their club) is all about,” Student Activities Coordinator Doug Shumway said. The event took place on April 12.
Many clubs, including Psi Beta, Latter Day Saints Student Association (LDSSA), and the Muslim Student Association, gathered to help raise money and help raise awareness of their club.
“The most important part of the Spring Bash is the elections for next year,” Shumway added. “Candidates campaign and interact with clubs.”
“We are raising money for various community projects,” Psi Beta representative Toni Anderson said. Psi Beta is the psychology/honors society for psychology students.
Some clubs, such as the Muslim Student Association, have been reactivated after taking time off. Nicole Hadley, a member of the Muslim Student Association, said, “We are trying to make a presence on campus. We also answer any questions about Islam.”
Other clubs, such as LDSSA, handed out free food to passing students, hoping to share information about their club. “(LDSSA) is an association for students who hold similar values,” member Clarissa Layton said. “We do a lot of service projects, such as Operation Iraqi Children, and anyone is welcome to participate in these activities.”
In addition to the Spring Bash, the rose garden, as well as the new bus stop located at the north end of campus, were recently dedicated in honor of U.S. veterans.
The rose garden, now known as the Blue Star Memorial, is the largest commemorative rose garden in the southwestern United States.
On April 5, MCC, along with other countless volunteers, marked the Rose Garden along Southern Avenue as the Blue Star Memorial, in commemoration of those who served in the U.S. armed forces.
“All of the roses have patriotic names...as you look around the rose garden you will see the special commitment made...,” said Jared Langkilde, executive assistant for marketing/public relations to MCC President Larry Christiansen.
Langkilde was presented with a plaque from the Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs Inc., because of the role he played in making the event possible.
“The rose garden is the only place in the world where veterans can get together without being surrounded by tombstones, and still have patriotically named roses around them,” said Langkilde.
The 7,000 rose bushes planted along Southern were donated from across the country and flown in on planes.
Development for the rose garden and the bus shelter started nearly three and a half years ago, but not without problems.
The city of Mesa was unable to begin development of the bus shelter because it was upsetting those who were planning the rose garden.
They decided to push the bus station as far westward as legally possible to avoid excessive noise, and a rose garden overcrowded with people waiting for the bus.
“It really became a greater symbol for partnership,” said Langkilde
