Thunderbird Quinn Barfield is becoming a two-sport star as other basketball players are resting their joints in the off-season. After leading the men’s basketball team into the playoffs, Barfield has now switched into track and field mode.
Barfield is one of the few two-sport athletes at MCC who has excelled in both sports.
Currently, Barfield has found his way over the bar, so to speak, as he recently broke a personal high jump record of 6’9”. Barfield is now jumping as high as 6’10 ½” in competition.
“I was really excited,” Barfield said regarding his personal goal. “Inside I was doing back flips, but I tried to keep it really low key and not get excited. It felt great though.”
Barfield, who ended his basketball season No. 2 in scoring within the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, now joins the MCC high jump team, trying to make the same impact on the high jump as he did on the court.
“(Quinn has) only been training for a couple weeks and he’s already a contender to win the region championship in the high jump,” high jump coach Tricia Melfy said. “He’s definitely on his way to making that happen.”
Barfield, who is a history and secondary education major, has received offers from various schools across the country for basketball, yet his first goal is finishing up this year at MCC.
