Mesa Community College’s own music department performed the musical, “ The Little Shop of Horrors” at the Phoenix Theatre. It was put performed on July 29-31, and also on August 5-7.The play was directed and choreographed by Robbie Harper, musically directed by Alan Ruch, executively produced by Sue Anne Lucius, and the set was designed by Gregory Jaye.
The play was put on in an attempt to raise awareness and funds for the growing concern of literacy, which threatens the future of Arizona’s future workforce. Every year hundreds of students, in the Maricopa County Community College District devote thousands of hours of free tutoring for school children that are struggling with their reading and writing skills.
Through out the year there are free workshops provided to the public in which parents are given free materials, software and tools specially designed for one-on-one teaching. Upon leaving these workshops parents are equipped with the knowledge needed to better teach their children how to read and write.
Alerting the public’s attention to these needs of the community results in more corporate sponsorships and personal donations making these important programs possible. Also the donations gained from these fundraisers go towards giving the tutors the opportunity to be highly trained in individualized reading and writing skills, so they can better fulfil the needs of these students who need someone working with them one-on-one, responding to their personal needs. The district puts together these resources in order to give parents and the community a sense of hope that tomorrow’s future may be a brighter one, a hope that the problems of literacy among students may someday be extinguished.
