Mesa Community College’s
Stagedoor Players were ready to unleash their latest production
titled Habeas Corpus as the curtains opened Friday, Jan. 28.
Habeas Corpus, written by Alan Bennett, is a farcical comedy relating
to the laissez-faire time of the 1970’s. Britain had just
lifted the censorship ban and these folks had a lot to say.
Dec. 17 was the start of six weeks of rehearsals for these actors.
A few minor setbacks did not keep the show from going on. One actor
quit, but with enough time to find a replacement they were able
to continue.
MCC’s Theatre Outback is home to many of the plays produced
by Stagedoor Players. This theatre hosted Habeas Corpus on Jan.
28-29 at 7:30 p.m., and Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. The play also ran at the
MCC Red Mountain Community Room on Feb. 3-4 at 7:30 p.m.
The play was director Meggan Gannon’s first production. She
was proud of how well the actors performed and said, “It went
so good. A few mistakes here and there, but the actors covered them
so well that I was the only one who noticed.”
Habeas Corpus proved to be a success on opening weekend, with a
packed house at all three performances in the Theatre Outback.
The ten dollar admission fee was not only used for costumes, but
also went to a special scholarship fund for other actors.
The Stagedoor Talent Award is awarded to five or six actors each
semester. “It is a two-hundred dollar award that most actors
couldn’t be here without,” said Gannon, who was also
the recipient of this award.
The Stagedoor Players Scholarship Fund ranges from $25-$500 per
semester for the students. Both the Talent award and Players Scholarship
require a C-plus GPA and each recipient must be a full-time student.
The third award is the Ron Hill Technical Theatre Scholarship. This
scholarship gives away $250-$500 per semester, but the requirements
are more difficult. Students must be technical theatre majors, full-time
students, maintain a B average, and work on at least one production
each semester.
There will be another opportunity to donate to these scholarship
funds on May 6, when the play, Broadway Bound, a Musical Revue,
will appear at the Theatre Outback.
