Letter to the Editor:

Are white people afraid?

Allow me to introduce myself. I teach philosophy at Central Arizona College. I am Mexican-American and Oglala Sioux. I am basically the only Indian this campus has ever employed as a full-time faculty member. An African-American student of mine (he was an honors student besides being an outstanding athlete) once wrote in an essay that, “white people are afraid of everything.” After reading your article, I have to say I agree with him. What are you afraid of? Does “cultural diversity” really frighten you that much? Do American Indians, Mexican-Americans and African-Americans and our ideas really scare you that much? A little “cultural diversity” might help you understand other cultures. Compared to the “crap” American Indians like myself have to face everyday, white people have it easy. Wake up!

Robert L. Perea
Professor of Philosophy, Central Arizona College
