April 15 means one thing - it’s deadline day for all American’s
to file their taxes.
Many students stress about getting their taxes done, but instead
of scurrying to a local tax preparation office, students have the
opportunity to stay on campus to receive assistance with filing
their taxes.
MCC is trying to ease the scramble and help students get their taxes
done cheap and early.
Students are now able to access a free tax preparation service through
the Service Learning department.
The free tax preparation service is available to low-income workers
who cannot afford professional assistance or to those who may want
to save a dollar or two.
This service is supported by VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
and manned by volunteers.
VITA can be found on the Mesa Community College Main campus Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Candidates will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
Adrianna Venegas, a former MCC student, stated “the wait may
be a little long, but it is definitely worth the free price tag.”
With about 12 volunteers at the MCC site ready to help, Venegas
noticed there were hardly any students participating in this free
service.
For students who find the Red Mountain more convenient, VITA volunteers
will be in the Acacia Village Building on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m.,
by appointment only. Services will also be available on Saturdays
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and students will be taken on a first-come,
first-served basis.
For more information or to make an appointment at the Red Mountain
Campus call (480) 644-2387.
VITA services will be available to students and members of the community
from Feb. 5 through April 9.
