‘Be Cool’ is not cool
Derk Harron
Mesa Legend
“Be Cool” is like watching an amateur modernized reenactment
of its prequel “Get Shorty.”
One of the main schemes, other then money, in “Get Shorty”
was everyone in the movie wanting to invest cash into a dead man’s
movie script. Instead of a movie script, everyone in “Be Cool”
wants a piece of a promising young pop-star-in-training played by
Christina Milian.
John Travolta once again plays the lovable lone shark, Chili Palmer,
which wants to get out of the movie business and into the music
industry after discovering Milian performing in a bar. Palmer takes
her as his protégé even though she is under contract
with Raji (Vince Vaughn), a white guy who so eagerly wants to be
black.
While Palmer tries to obtain Milian’s record contract, he
meets an assortment of awful acting individuals such as, The Rock,
who plays as a gay bodyguard who’s funny at first, but the
stereotypical gay role is stretched too long and becomes an irritating
part of the movie.
Vaughn, who lately seems to be casted in every comedic movie released
these days, is even more annoying with his over-played gangster
talk, and I can’t believe Steven Tyler has an acting role
in this movie, either.
Let’s not forget Harvey Keitel, an actor that means a lot
to me from his roles in, “Reservoir Dogs” and “Taxi
Driver.” It’s sad to see him in bad movies such as this
one.
Uma Thurman, who is such a great actress when she’s in the
right movies, is another star that can’t feel her own shoes
as she plays an owner of an indie record label that teams up with
Palmer to take over Milian’s music contract.
OK, the movie is supposed resemble a comical dark side of the music
industry, but there doesn’t need to be so much singing and
dancing, either.
If you liked “Get Shorty” then spend your money on the
2-Disc Collector’s Edition on DVD. I even hear you get a free
ticket to “Be Cool,” but I wouldn’t use it if
I were you.
