With their season more than one third complete, the MCC baseball team has shown their ability on the field, posting a 5-2 record within the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, and a 13-4 overall record as of Feb. 27.
The Thunderbird’s pitching staff is lead by sophomore pitchers Kyler Newby, Tom Johnson and Paul Schmidt. Together they have an earned run average of .78. Newby, with a .69 ERA, has struck out 25 batters in 23 innings pitched, and has yet to give up an earned run. Johnson, who has a 1.08 ERA, and eight strike outs in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Left-handed pitcher Schmidt, who maintains a 1.25 ERA, leads the team with 33 strike outs in 28 2/3 innings pitched. Combined, these pitchers have given up only one loss.
Offensively, freshmen infielder Steve Mays, and sophomore catcher Doug Low lead MCC. With Mays’ .415 batting average, 22 hits and 16 runs and Low’s .396 batting average, 17 runs batted in and 19 hits, the team holds a .322 team batting average, along with 180 hits thus far this season.
“Our position players have been getting some big hits for us,” Head Coach Tony Cirelli said. “We have a chance to win when our three starting pitchers (Newby, Schmitt and Johnson) play.”
In the infield, freshman outfielder Nate Burnham, has a team high seven stolen bases, and freshman first baseman, Michael Levi, has 20 hits, two triples and 14 RBI’s. Sophomore infielder Edgar Ramirez has also shined, having 19 hits, four doubles, and 9 RBI’s. Ramirez has also contributed three stolen bases.
“We have a real young team,” said Coach Cirelli. “We only have two position players that are sophomores.”
