The MCC English department is currently
accepting entries for the 2005 Creative Writing Contest. Acceptable
entries include personal essays, short stories, and poetry, with
only MCC students eligible to submit writings. Winners and honorable
mentions receive cash prizes ranging from $25-$75 in each category,
public acknowledgment, and will be invited to the English Department
Banquet on Wednesday, May 4. “I really want to encourage
students to participate,” first year Creative Writing Contest
sponsor and English teacher Kate Mohler said. “I think it’s
a great opportunity for our students.” Support for the contest
comes highly from the English department faculty, as they volunteer
to judge the contest every year.
Last year’s first place winner for the short story and poetry
category was Bernard Provencher, and the creative non-fiction
category winner was Jeffrey Lu. “Personally, I love the
fact that we have our own creative writing contest,” Mohler
said, adding, “Just entering the contest is a positive step
for students who write.” Entry forms are available in the
English department hallway. The deadline for entries is noon on
Friday, March 25. Entries may be submitted to the English department.
Questions about the contest can
be directed to Kate Mohler at (480) 461-7850 or katemohler@mail.mc.maricopa.edu.
