Humanitarian project allows MCC students to reach out

MCC students have a unique, new opportunity to donate their time and money to help support children around the world.
The ASMCC, Phi Theta Kappa, LDSSA, and other clubs, are joining with the international humanitarian project: Operation Iraqi Children to help brighten the future of children in Iraq.
The goal of this humanitarian project is to collect school supplies from students and members in the community for distribution to school age Iraqi children.
Bins will be conveniently placed around the MCC campus so students can purchase items in the bookstore and drop them off.
There will be two bins in the Kirk Center, and one in the bookstore. Another bin will be located in the library, and another in the LDSSA building across Dobson Rd. from the main campus.
Service Commissioner and Vice President of Leadership in Phi Theta Kappa, Jeffrey Linford said, “This event has been snowballing. It started out as a small project, but as people are aware of how they can help, it is amazing to watch people unite together and help those in need.”
Golden’s Family Fitness, located at 931 S. Gilbert Rd., will host an event on April 9, to collect items for the children.
The fitness center has joined efforts with MCC to offer food, entertainment, raffles and many activities, to help collect goods for the cause.
Golden’s will be offering membership specials with the fees being donated to the Iraqi school supply kits.
A bin will be placed at Golden’s to collect items from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Flyers will be posted around campus with a list of the items needed to makeup the kits, however basic items include: blunt-ended scissors, 12 pencils, pencil sharpeners, large erasers, notebook paper and much more.
Committees will gather the items from the bins and bring them to the LDSSA building located at 1310 S. Dobson, which is across Dobson Rd. and North of Banner Samaritan Hospital.
Volunteers will then participate in “Into the Streets,” a sponsored service day for students.
On April 5, students can gather together at the LDSSA building to organize, box and label, the collected supplies.
Items collected will be boxed and shipped through FedEx to Kansas City, where the American soldiers will deliver the supplies to the Iraqi children.
