The Mesa Community College Lady Thunderbirds tennis team continued their dominance this year beating Paradise Valley Community College 8-1. The win improved MCC’s record to 8-2 in conference and 8-4 overall.
The day was highlighted by a sweep of all three doubles matches, one by forfeit. The lone loss came when Colleen Sullivan (ranked No. 2) had to retire from her match because of an ankle injury while already up 5-1 in her second set. Tennis coach Penny Powell said the injury did not seem serious after a trainer examined her.
As far as the season goes, Powell said the team is doing well. “Our depth is solid,” Powell said. Sarah Larson (ranked No. 6) and Anna Wan (ranked No. 5) said the real strength of the team is that “all the players get along well.”
“Our biggest challenge is Scottsdale Community College,” Powell said. Scottsdale CC accounts for both of MCC’s conference losses so far this season.
The two non-conference losses were to the College of Wichita and the University of Connecticut.
Despite previous losses to Scottsdale, Powell believes that “if the girls play as well as they can,” MCC has a decent chance of winning the regional tournament following the regular season.
