The Lady Thunderbirds softball team suffered a minor setback losing a double-header to perennial power Phoenix College 5-3 and 11-2 respectively. The losses dropped Mesa Community College to 28-17 with a 12-10 conference record.
In the first game, starting pitcher Evonne Corona, gave up four runs in five innings as MCC lost that game 5-3. The turning point came when Phoenix College shortstop, Chelsie Mesa, hit a homerun in the top of the third off Corona to shift momentum their way.
In the second game of the double header, MCC struggled through an 11-2 loss. Starting pitcher Malia Simmons, in her first game back from injury, was tagged for all 11 runs including a grand slam in the second inning by Phoenix College center fielder Casey Wheeler. The score was 9-2 after the first two innings and remained that way until Simmons gave up the final two runs in the top of the sixth.
Softball coach DeWight Byron said that in the double header they made a lot of mistakes against a very good team.
“We were competitive though,” Byron said.
MCC has now lost all four games in the season series against Phoenix College.
