Mesa Community College’s bowler, Brandi Clark, was awarded NJCAA All-American honors at this year’s national bowling tournament in Buffalo, NY.
Clark earned the a score of 2189 as MCC finished out the tournament with a fifth place ranking and a score of 11,416 total pins.
Clark collected the honor with her outstanding play in Buffalo. “I didn’t expect to get the award, but when I got to the tournament, I realized that it could be a big possibility.”
This was Clark’s fifth year bowling and she joined the MCC bowling team because she “loved the competitiveness of the sport.”
Clark has had scholarship offers to Minnesota State and Weber State, but plans to continue on to ASU.
“ASU is supposed to have a great team next year, and I will be able to join up with old friends,” Clark said.
Clark was unhappy about lost opportunities because of minimal funding this year. “If we would have had more funding, I think we would have been more successful, but I think we did a good job this year,” Clark said.
The women finished the tournament with a doubles and singles team that totaled 5222 points as the men finished with 5836.
Team members Rachel Carr finished in third place in the singles event with a score of 584, and Chris Weyrauch was given a fifth place ranking with a score of 689. Rebekah Gottlieb partnered with Clark in the doubles event for a third place award with a score of 1103.
After practices began in September, the players participated in four tournaments. The team traveled all over the country including Nevada and Indiana before finishing up in New York. Due to financial difficulties, the team did not have enough funding to participate in other tournaments.
“We had many strong players this season who have dedicated their time to working hard,” Head Coach Karl Simonis said.
