Spotlight

The Mesa ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) will be hosting its fourth annual National Cleanup Day on May 14. There are many low- to moderate-income families in the city and most of these families live in neighborhoods that have become depressed areas that the city tends to neglect. Many of these families experience features such as graffiti, abandoned and broken into cars, broken house windows, litter on streets, and large amounts of crime. As a result of this, ACORN is sponsoring a program entitled “Making It Happen.” This program will gather volunteers who are willing to help better the surrounding communities who need the help the most. On May 14, members will pick up litter and discarded trash, remove abandoned cars and old appliances, and will aid in helping plant trees. The program will also focus on community interaction aspects as well. These informal interactions will include car pools, child care co-ops, games, sports leagues, youth mentoring programs, and police foot patrols. Hopefully, through this contact, the people in the neighborhood will get to know one another and will build a stronger community because of it.
