social lives push limits

More than 27,000 students attend Mesa Community College and only 56 percent of those are full-timers. Students have found it difficult to manage their time with school, work, family, and their social life. The cause can vary from procrastination, lack of motivation and organization, or plain laziness.
“First, make a schedule. Second, look at similar tasks and group them if possible. Third, look at multitasking-like studying while waiting in the doctor’s office, so that these moments are not lost. Say no to people and activities that don’t move you forward in life.” Cindy Cooke, psychology professor and author of From Turmoil to Tranquility, suggests to students.
Ten students were surveyed and the average student spent three hours at school, six at work, two with family, and two with friends or a significant other.
Scheduling and organization is the most original and successful steps to time management. Take time to set a schedule of where to be and when. Be on time and make sure you make time for everything including sleep. Being sleep deprived can be a main reason for skipping events for some sleep.
Work and no play can be an unsuccessful plan and isn’t recommended. If a person has no free time, it will be physically and mentally draining. An activity should be set to free your mind and let some bad energy out.
Jessica Barnett ,a freshman at MCC, talks about her own experiences.
“I have my priorities that come first and then I use up my free time. So far, these two weeks have been good. In college, it’s hard to fit everything into one day.” Most freshmen can relate to Jessica — just out of high school, and not knowing what to expect and how much time actually gets cut out of your day.
Procrastination is the major factor to managing time. Waiting until the last minute can cause stress and leaves no time for priorities. Procrastinating roots from lack of motivation. Lack of motivation to get things done is no way to help fix time management problems.
Scheduling can also be difficult if one is unorganized. Organization can be a key to successful time management. Having to go to one place to another or doing something at a strict time can help a great deal.
When laziness comes into play and interferes with wanting to go to work, school, or socializing, then all necessary efforts should be taken to instill some needed motivation. Get a job that comes to your interest, go to school and major in something your good at, and set aside an hour or two for family or friends.
Next time, if you find yourself in a lack of strategizing your time, make a schedule, keep a day-by-day calendar, and run errands at a certain time.
