Local businesses lined up for the opportunity to converse with MCC students during the recent vendor days that took place on Aug. 23 and 24. The event was sponsored by Student Life and Leadership.

Free enterprise was alive and buzzing on the Mesa Community College campus, Aug. 23 and 24. Vendor Days were in full swing. A brief walk from the Kirk Center to the Library afforded the student body a barrage of marketing by local businesses. Vendor tables were set up in the main courtyard poised to reach that key demographic: the college student. Every vendor perched ready to pounce on a moment with one valued student. College Students like fast computers and pretty much anything else that runs on electrons. However, at Vendor Days there were no booths with ludicrous wares. For example, Compass Bank was on hand to inform potential customers of their accounts for students.
“The truth is that the Mesa Community College campus is very protected,” Greg Reents, director of Student Life and Leadership said. Therefore, what little vendor’s do get the privilege of on-site marketing at MCC usually have something of value to offer students. Reents elaborated, “I believe very strongly in the community aspect of the community college.” Having ten to twenty community representatives from local businesses filter in and out of MCC’s campus for two days is mild in comparison to what occurs at institutions such as ASU. If intentions are to transfer to ASU, or any other major university, one should enjoy the fleeting tranquility of MCC’s campus. At other institutions Reents and his staff aren’t the watchdogs.
Being the marketing watchdog and providing involvement opportunities is the mission of Student Life and Leadership. The next on-campus Student Life and Leadership scheduled event is the Clubs Carnival, Sept. 22. During Clubs Carnival, all student clubs advertise what they are about and try to attract new members. Everything from the Asian-Pacific Islander Coalition, to the Mesa Community College Democrats Club will be represented between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
