Depth and experience will be the keys to success as the MCC Thunderbirds embark on the 2004 football season.
The Thunderbirds finished 3-7 last year as they were hampered by a late-arriving coaching staff, limited recruiting, and a lack of experience.
Head football coach, Dan Dunn, said that his team’s biggest weakness was a “lack of numbers.” By the end the year, there were a lot of freshman receiving substantial playing time.
Despite the circumstances, Coach Dunn expects the knowledge gained by last year’s players to start paying dividends on the field this season.
The Mesa Community College Volleyball team has had a good start in making their mark in the ACCAC region by starting 3-0, and sweeping their last two opponents.
Head Coach Tricia Melfy says the team is “ahead of schedule” and much quicker than she expected.
Mesa Community College’s rival, Glendale CC, was one of the most anticipated match-ups coming into the season for the volleyball team.
Coach Tricia Melfy pointed out three major teams that are the most formidable in the region, being Chandler-Gilbert, Eastern Arizona and Glendale. Her goal for her team is to finish third in the region.
Mesa started off well when Eastern Arizona went down first on Aug. 27. Sure the girls were thrilled to win after coming back from only being able to take one of the first three matches, to winning the last two matches 32-30 and 15-11.
