Americorps is an organization that has been running on campus for the past two years and is sponsored by the Center for Service Learning. Its core purpose is to supply students with the opportunity to earn more money for college tuition and qualified student loans through the act of giving back to the student’s community with service learning. Students who are interested in this program must sign up for one term within one of the three goal areas. The goal areas include education, community strengthening, and homeland security. One thousand dollars will be awarded for 300 hours over the course of one year, 450 hours will result in a $1,250 cash award over one year, and for 900 hours or more in two years, $2,362.50 will be given to an achieving student. In order to be qualified for this program, the student must be a citizen of the United States (or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien), at least 17 years of age, and have obtained a high school diploma (or a GED or working towards a GED), within the year of the service learning. Orientations regarding the program and more information will take place on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. and on Thursdays at 12:00 p.m. in the Maricopa Room in the Kirk Center.
