A student's how-to guide for self-promotion

Desiree McDonald
Mesa Legend

Competition… it’s always out there, whether it’s for a desired job, a college application, or anything else students may submit themselves to. So, what can students do to make themselves stand out above the crowd?
The famous Dr. Phil can certainly help with that question. He compiled a “formula for success,” and posted it on his website. “Have a Vision,” he said. Students need to know what they want and then strive for it. Also on the list were the words “Find a Passion,” and “Take Risks.” People will only be happy if they do what they enjoy. Finding what makes people happy and energetically working towards it is a great way to start on the road to success.

Everyday, student’s belongings are thrown into a cabinet and sit there, waiting to be claimed. Many students are unaware, but this cabinet, reading “lost and found” lies in the Mesa Community’s Department of Public Safety.
In spring 2004, 658 items were turned into Public Safety’s lost and found. Of those, 260 were claimed and returned to the owners. Items range from identification cards and math books, to car keys and wallets.
Supervisor of the College Safety Department, Paul Springall, said many students do not claim those items.

Hispanic Heritage Month emphasizes roots

The celebration of art, music, and history for Hispanic Heritage Month will be observed on the Mesa Community College campus, Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
This is a time for the Hispanic students and community to get involved in activities surrounding their culture. The Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan of MCC (M.E.Ch.A) club is sponsoring the Hispanic Heritage event calendar.
Sept. 15 kicked off the month with an Aztec Dance Opening Ceremony, held on the lawn near the clock tower about 6 p.m.
Approximately 10 dancers arrived with various drums, attire including elaborately displayed head dresses, and candles for the alter display.
