Personality over appearance

College is a time for many things, as many college grads will tell you. Sex, drugs, rock-and-roll, and politics; they all make sense on how they are incorporated into student's lives. Yet there are some things that still catch me off guard, with all of the experimenting taking place.
High school seems to be the height of students trying to make a statement with their appearance. In high school though, these statements make more sense. Younger people emulating something they think is "cool" because their personalities have not blossomed to be able to express these beliefs in words, many times.

Surfing for sex: private behavior in public

Today let us broach one of my favorite topics: Internet Porn. As an adult, it’s "yeah, baby!" As a mother of a male teen, well, I kind of cringe and wait for this time in my son's life to pass. Here is a favorite soapbox, short label: personal behavior in public places.
Internet porn covers a few broad areas: personal rights, objectification of (usually) females, the right of government or a community to dictate public standards, and probably a few other topics. For today, let’s stick with Perusal of Porn in Public Places.
Perusing porn in a public place is not a good idea. Especially in a public library, such as the Elsner Library.
And after asking, John-at-the-information-desk said that he does have his occasional, umm … “purveyors.”

Legend's View: |
Pepper spray vs. firearms for campus safety
A proposal sent to the District Safety Committee stated that the Certified College Safety Officers on campus requested the right to carry guns on campus and use them if necessary. The proposal has raised many questions as to why, specifically, officers need to carry lethal weapons in such a safe community where violence is not tolerated, or even seen. Some do believe that the guns will bring a new, positive presence to MCC that has not been seen before, and will better the quality of the school. The Director of College Safety, Steve Corich, stated, "We’re not going to have a S.W.A.T team, we’re not going to have a tank. We want to be able to respond to the most serious incidents on campus."
