Cate Edwards, the daughter of vice presidential candidate John Edwards made a short visit to Mesa Community College on Sept. 21.
Although her visit was brief, interested students, whether Republican or Democrat, filled the room for her presentation for the Kerry and Edwards campaign.
Edwards made the atmosphere casual and comfortable from her casual youthful dress to her overall presentation and speech.
Larry Christiansen, president of Mesa Community College, spoke briefly saying that “ the students’ interest and desire to participate in politics is extremely important to the college experience and MCC.”
Although Edwards was casual and youthful, she wasted no time getting to the real issues emphasizing the youths role in this election.
“ The 48 million young people in the United States can help decide our political future, and there is so much at stake this election, we have the ability to choose what our future looks like,” Edwards said.
She went on to talk about the Kerry and Edwards plan to make a higher level of education more affordable by giving parents a $4,000 tax credit for education. Another plan calls for students to work for two years in their surrounding community and then they would receive four years of college tuition paid. She also stated that Kerry and Edwards believes that “ everyone deserves a quality, affordable education.”
In her introduction she had stressed that Arizona was a vital state to the election. Edwards commented that traditionally Arizona had been a highly Republican state but that as of recently, the support in favor of Kerry had grown. She believed this was because Kerry had specifically addressed many issues important to Arizonans, such as job losses, healthcare and education.
“Bad choices have been made by this administration and what goes on in Washington does effect us here. Arizona holds 10 electoral votes making Arizona vital to this election, if we can turn Arizona blue we could win this election.”
