Legend's View:
MCC spirit is willing but students weak
When does a person want to go to school? Elementary, junior high, high school and college; think about it. It was when you were involved in something, wasn’t it?
When there was an activities day or field trip in elementary, you sure wanted to go.
When there were intramurals in Junior High you wanted to go, right?
We all wanted to go to school homecoming week to find a date and show our school spirit in high school.
So what about college?
Chances are that you don’t play football or basketball now. By no coincidence, those are the people that this article is directed at.
Show some ambition, get results, and take some chances; get involved. Whether becoming a part of the student government, participating in a large study group, or just going out to support MCC Thunderbird sporting events, it’s going to help show support for your college and enhance the college experience.
Many disregard or don’t realize how rewarding a community college can be. Socially, credentially and for the memories, MCC can be very rewarding. Don’t you want to have more of a life? Why wouldn’t you? Get involved in student government and meet someone with a like mind. Go to Homecoming and share the festivities with fellow students. What is it going to hurt? What a treat to see a quality football team that almost pulled off an upset of the number one NJCAA football team earlier this season.
The Mesa community doesn’t seem too involved with its community college though. Sure, there are the long lines at registration and the book store the first week of school, but when it comes to getting everything out of your college experience, why not have good times with the people around you every day, making connections that will benefit you as you start your career? There is something to be said for the friendships that can develop here as well.
So, enjoy spirit week. Get to know some new people. Vote for your student government president as well as your homecoming king and queen. Then go to the homecoming football game in this lovely weather and soak up the renaissance theme while watching Mesa’s explosive running game.
Most people go away to a big college for the “social atmosphere.” The students though, ultimately make the “social atmosphere” with their involvement. Therefore, it is not necessary to go away to college to take advantage of a social atmosphere.
Each MCC student can contribute to building the social atmosphere here, and it makes more sense than the alternative. Your college and community will prosper from your influence instead of someone else’s.
