Letters to the Editor

Private enterprise and profits
Recently, John Laurie labeled MCC's bookstore as biased against conservatives. The Republican claims the bookstore is stocking too much liberal literature and “demands immediate correction”.
Due to the Arizona state legislature’s encouragement to utilize private enterprises, the MCC bookstore is now privately owned by Follett Higher Education Group. Like any other business, Follett is here to sell as much as they can.
You would think a Republican could grasp the concept of profit-making. Supply and demand. If the students’ general opinion is pro-Kerry, then provide a selection of literature that meets their demands.
However, Follett denies having a public agenda. In fact, the company has never had a similar complaint from any of the other 700 campuses run by Follett.
Perhaps Mr. Laurie has gotten his panties in a bunch. Or maybe Mr. Laurie is, himself, biased against the liberal view. The fuel to his fire seems to be the growing Democratic opinions on campus. Yes, Mr. Laurie, this is a conservative state. However, don't expect the students of MCC to blindly follow the state’s lead.
Spokeswoman for Follett, Pat Goodman explains, “We would be hard pressed to find enough pro-Bush books to balance what the critics are publishing.”
Mr. Laurie should take that into consideration. If the nation's most widely published political books are anti-Bush, then maybe not the bookstore, not the MCC campus, but in fact, the nation’s popular stance is anti-Bush!
