Gridders stampede road foes

After coming close to beating No. 1 Dixie College, and having a player named NJCAA player of the week for that game (Austen Collins), Mesa took to their two-game road trip, Sept. 24. Their first game was against New Mexico Military Institute, Sept 25, in Roswell, New Mexico. Mesa spanked their second military institute of the season (the other being the Air Force JV) for a 33-14 victory the first game of the season.
Austen Collins went over the century mark again with 103 yards rushing, hauled in a reception for 40 yards and added a touchdown.
The following week, Oct. 2, Mesa had a road game here in the valley against Phoenix College.
No worries, Mesa came to play, stomping a mud-hole in Phoenix College and running it dry winning 41-19.
Collins rushed for 145 yards in that contest, but not out-dueling the other playmaker in the backfield, Jeremiah White, who had 160 yards and three touchdowns.
Averaging over eight yards a carry together, White and Collins, ran Mesa to their third victory of the season. White and Collins have already rushed for over 1,100 yards and 10 touchdowns for the season in four games.
Offensive coordinator Roger Schenks, offered that Mesa has a much better offensive line and an effective tight end as opposed to last year as a reason for improvemment this year.
Other things that are fueling this year’s success, according to Schenks, “the personality of our team is much different from last year, as well as attitude and will.”
“This team is running better and more against a league that, as a whole, is better than last year,” says Schenks.
By Homecoming, Mesa will have played two highly ranked NJCAA teams in Dixie and Snow Colleges. Homecoming may be a cause for celebration for Mesa Community College; they could very well be 4-1 with the toughest part of their schedule over with.
