Valley needs better buses

Jamar Younger
Editor-In-Chief

The Phoenix metropolitan area has everything in common with other major metropolitan areas in the U.S. It has a booming population, an above average economy, a vibrant night life (thanks to the recently instituted 2 a.m. last call), and every other amenity that could be asked for in a bustling urban environment.
There is, however, one element of city life that the Valley lacks: a viable public transportation system. This element keeps Phoenix from competing with other big city regions in terms of offering choices and flexibility for residents.
Proposition 400 would help to bring that element to the Valley. This proposition would continue the existing half-cent sales tax that is already devoted to transportation. The tax would help fund a $15.8 million transportation plan for the Maricopa county region.

Moore Ramen, Michael?

Derk Harron Cartoonist

Filmmaker Michael Moore visited Arizona twice on his 60-city “Slacker Uprising Tour” as he makes an effort to get non-voters to the polls Nov. 2.
Moore was first in Tucson Oct. 11, where he gathered more than 15,000 people at the University of Arizona’s McKale Center. Both left and right-winged political minds showed up for the event, and hundreds of protesters were outside the entrance yelling out their views on Moore and Democratic nominee John Kerry, as I entered the building.

Letters to the Editor

Don’t just vote, make it count
After reading the latest articles by the Political Science instructors--Brian Dille and Alex Avila--encouraging students to vote, one idea came strongly to mind: Don’t just vote! I am writing for those of you that don’t care. I have a solution: Don’t just vote! Why do you need MTV to tell you that voting is important? Since when do you need to vote if you don’t care? If all the latest major issues in the American life, you still don’t care, let me tell you something: Don’t just vote!

Healthcare treats the selective viruses

Rebecca Straughmatt Photo Editor

In the final debate Oct. 13, a key issue mentioned was rising healthcare costs and Americans who have lost their healthcare during Bush’s tenure.
Both candidates presented very diverse healthcare plans for Americans. Kerry plans to lower premiums while Bush pushes tax-free Health Savings Accounts (HSA), but both parties are overlooking the real reason behind healthcare problems.
As many students realize, health insurance costs money, a commodity many of us just don’t have. With high gas prices, tuition, rent, food, and many more needs that come with a price tag, what is left over for health insurance?

Legend's View:

Prop. 401 means growth

Mesa Community College is predicting that in the near future the student population at MCC will be so high that the current buildings will not be large enough to accommodate the overflow of students.
On the Nov. 2 ballot a proposition (Prop 401), will issue (if passed) $951,359,000 in bond money to aid in the renovation and new construction of Maricopa Community Colleges, in order to accomodate future students.
The bond will be paid over a time span of 20 years, and the buildings that will be constructed will be completed within the next 10 years. With that fact in mind, voters are asking, “Why should I vote ‘yes’ on a proposition that will not benefit me?”
Yes, it is true that students presently attending Maricopa Community Colleges will not immediately benefit from the bond; but it will prove to help the credibility of the schools and the current student in the future.
