Latron Kickson, #19, returns an interception 70 yards for a touchdown for the Thunderbird’s first score in Mesa’s homecoming loss to Glendale. The loss dropped MCC to 3-3 on the season.

The Mesa Thunderbirds, in front of a crowd of about 1,000 for homecoming, lost to the Glendale Gauchos 21-13. MCC could not punch the ball in the end zone after four tries starting from the three yard line in the 4th quarter to possibly tie the game with a two point conversion and were never able to get close again.
Latron Kickson’s returned interception off Glendale’s quarterback, Nick Gehrts, with 70 yards for a touchdown, gave MCC it’s first score as the crowd exploded for their homecoming hopefuls.

Sophomore Dominique Altamirano tries to block an attempted kill during the T-bird’s loss to Eastern Arizona.

MCC volleyball might be peaking at the right time. The Thunderbirds have won three straight games to improve their record to 21-9, with four games remaining on the regular season schedule. MCC beat Pima Community College Oct. 15, and Yavapai Community College Oct. 13.
MCC traveled to Tucson to battle Pima. PCC was overwhelmed by the Thunderbird attack led by sophomore co-captain Hayden Johnson’s 22 digs and freshman Irene Bahe’s 15 kills. Bahe attributes each win to the hard work they put in at practice.

Amy John(left) and Cassie Campbell are sisters who are a big part of the Volleyball team and are reuinited after rivaling in high school.

Twins? “Yeah right,” Cassie Campbell laughs then explains that she and recently married Amy John, are sisters separated by two years. Their fellow volleyball teammates have nicknamed the pair “The Twins” and the girls agree that they could have passed for twins before Amy changed her hair color from blonde to brown.
Still, there is a five and a half inch difference in height between the girls, Cassie standing at 5’4 ½ inches, while Amy towers at 6 feet. It is understandable why Cassie finds their nickname comical. Differences between the twins do not stop at appearances; Cassie is the team’s setter and Amy plays opposite.

After coming close to beating No. 1 Dixie College, and having a player named NJCAA player of the week for that game (Austen Collins), Mesa took to their two-game road trip, Sept. 24. Their first game was against New Mexico Military Institute, Sept 25, in Roswell, New Mexico. Mesa spanked their second military institute of the season (the other being the Air Force JV) for a 33-14 victory the first game of the season.

The Mesa men’s soccer team played yet another top-ranked team in Chandler-Gilbert Community College and fell to 4 and 2 after a close, physical game.
In the second half, things got very physical between the two teams and Mesa even had a player thrown out of the game. Freshman midfielder, Andrew Chorley, got tossed for arguing and bumping into the referee.
“Andrew accidentally bumped into the ref,” said coach Jason Green. “We played almost the whole second half, a man down.”
With about 20 minutes to go in the game, Mesa had a shot that was traveling straight for the goal, but a Chandler-Gilbert player intentionally put his hand up and stopped the ball from going in.
The score was 1-1 after the first half as forward Steven Gloria, struck first for the Thunderbirds. But being a man down proved too much for Mesa, as Chandler-Gilbert scored three goals in the second half to Mesa’s one. Defender Gabe Murrillo, had the second goal for the T-Birds.
