2004: Year of broken streaks
The beginning of 2004 offered many streaks that gave little hope for hopeful outcomes of various communities. As the end of 2004 is on the horizon, change is running rampant for the future hopes of these rejuvenated programs.
Boston comes to mind right away without a World Series victory since 1918, and that dreaded curse of the Bambino. No matter how much money they spent on their players, they were doomed and reminded us countless times of Bill Buckner, and so on.
How glad are you that Boston won, so you don’t have to hear about that damn curse anymore? Yeah, me too.
Another New England streak that finally ended was the Patriot’s 21 game winning streak, a remarkable feat in today’s NFL.
In college football Miami, Florida and Florida State, all lost in the same weekend, as well. Texas Tech beat Nebraska for the first time ever, convincingly 70-10.
Not to mention the incumbent Bush won the election, even though the Redskins lost, which would dictate that the challenger should have won dating back to the NFL merger, fixed election or not.
-Mesa volleyball was one win away from making regionals. By beating Arizona Western (ranked #1nationally) the T-Birds could have clinched, but were swept.
Overall, coach Patricia Melfy was pleased with the season saying “it’s been six or seven years since Mesa has won 22 matches.” Mesa finished 22-12 on the season.
-Results are in for the two Mesa cross country runners sent to nationals. Katie Forkner finished 29th with a time of 20:29.45, as Chloe Young-Bloom finished 43rd with a time of 20:29.80, in El Paso, Texas.
