The lady Thunderbird basketball team started the season a little rough, but are preparing for the upcoming games.
The first game was against New York’s Monroe Community College. At the end of the game, it was Monroe 84, Mesa 24. Though Monroe was last year’s #1 team in nationals, Monroe is not part of Mesa’s Division. This loss does not count towards MCC’s division score.
“The team got all the jitters out in this game, their adrenaline was high, too high, and had 32 turnovers,” Schamber said.
“The game showed the team good things, it was a learning process for them,” head coach Robin Schamber said. Schamber said they scheduled this game to prepare the team for the season.
Brandi Steinke was the top scorer of the game, scoring 12 the first half and two the second. However every player of the team put forth the effort. Each player had at least 20 minutes of playing time. All but three players scored during the game.
“We are very team oriented. Everyone plays an even role,” Coach Schamber said. The team believes in each other, and joined together for this game.
Mesa Community College not only plays within their conference, but also 11 other conference schools. When it comes to rivals, Schamber considers any team in Division 2, a rival.
“We have definite winners, these kids hate to lose and never give up,” Coach Schamber said. Sophomores Kayli Kauzlarich, Brooke Lynch, Brandi Steinke, Krisheena Tsingine, and Holly Wride are the only five returning players from last year.
The coaching staff’s realistic expectation for this year’s team is being the top four in the playoffs.
“I have high expectations to make it to nationals to represent our conference,” Coach Schamber said.
