Mesa Community College is giving students a chance to repair other students’ cars for next to nothing. The Automotive Technology Program is in need of automobiles to inspect and service during the course of this semester under the supervision of trained faculty members. This program allows students to repair cars in a hands-on learning environment, in order to better understand the components of an automobile. Automotive students taking part in the program can service both domestic and imported vehicles, model years 1989 through 2004, with automotive powertrain issues such as clutches or drive axles. Inspections and estimates are free of charge. If a repair is recommended, a second appointment may need to be scheduled. Parts needed to repair the vehicle will need to be furnished by the customer. A preferred donation rate is $20 per hour, which is approximately 70 percent less than the average automotive repair shop. Appointments are available Monday and Wednesday (during the day only), and Tuesday and Thursday (during the evening hours only). The class asks that no one schedules an appointment via e-mail, and should instead call between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. For more information regarding hours, drop-off times, pick-up times, or general information, call 461-7156.
