Spotlight

Associated Students of Mesa Community College helped to sponsor events throughout the day commemorating World AIDS Day, Dec. 1.
These events included free AIDS testing on campus in front of the Clock Tower by the Maricopa Health Department from 4-8:00 p.m., as well as speakers from informational organizations who specialize in the AIDS field. The highlight of the day was a very special guest speaker, Lorraine Brown, from the Maricopa Integrated Health System. Brown is a 20 year survivor of AIDS, and is using her story to inspire people to protect themselves more efficiently from the disease. She discussed topics such abstinence, safe sex, putting yourself at risk, being put at risk, and provided a great number of facts about the disease that she has learned to live with for a great portion of her life. Students on campus responded to the event with interest.
For students who would like to find out more information about safe sex, putting yourself at risk, or AIDS topics in general, the counseling department at Mesa Community College is a close and convenient place to seek advice. Other organizations such as Planned Parenthood, which often offers their services free of charge or with little cost to the patient, is also a popular and close resource to students. Their nearest location is on Alma School Rd. and Guadalupe on the northwest corner.
