Interested in getting out and seeing some fresh local music? Introducing the, “The Necronauts!!!” soaring in from Mesa.
“I guess you could say we are ‘indie rock’ and you could compare us to Pixies, Pavement, Minute Men, or Modest Mouse,” said singer and guitarist Billy Goodman.
The Necronauts have played alongside class acts such as the Pixies frontman Frank Black, Hank Williams III, Polysics, Mike Watt, and Built to Spill. Locally, they are regularly played on, “Local Frequency,” in the 11 p.m. time slot, weekdays on The Edge 103.9.
The band has played at a variety of venues around the valley from the Marquee Theater, the Clubhouse, the Sets, to Last Exit. In addition, the Necronauts will be finishing up a mini California tour with successful local band, The Format, in early February.
Even though career-wise things are starting to take off, they’ve been privileged to have helpful friends along the way. Andy Kirk Pangus, bass guitarist, said, “We’ve gotten a lot of help from friends like the Format.”
The group’s latest self-titled CD sold 500 units in its first week of release. The CD can be found at Eastside Records, Hoodlums on the ASU campus, Stinkweeds, and Borders. Zia Records has also been playing and promoting their new album at the store’s listening stations.
The Necronauts also have their own record label, “High School Football Records,” as a means to financially support themselves over the years.
“We needed to get our music out to the people and it’s a lot harder than you think to get signed to a good record label, so we started our own,” said Goodman.
Saturday, Feb. 18, the Necronauts will be performing at the Modified Arts, a half live music, half art gallery scene, located west of 7th Street and Roosevelt, in downtown Phoenix, which is the band’s venue of choice.
“A&R executives from California are flying in to attend the show, and we already have record contract deals on the table,” said Goodman. “Some independent record labels have already wanted to sign with us, but we’d like to keep our options open if a bigger label comes along.”
The Necronauts are asking that fans show up at this show to support them as they try and make an impression with the record executives.
“We want to start hanging out at the Playboy Mansion,” said newest member and guitarist, Carlito Demasio.
The foursome has a band website where individuals can access more information about them, upcoming shows, listen to mp3s, and view merchandise at thenecronauts.com.
