SPORTSVolleyball set for upcoming season
Arizona is quickly becoming a hotbed for youth volleyball, as evident from the clinic held for six days, 12 hours each day, at Mesa Community College in July.
The first two days were spent focusing on the individual player and her skills, while the last four days were centered on the team game, as teams from across the state attended to learn how to improve their game, as a group.
The clinic was run by Tricia Melfy, who is also the coach of the MCC volleyball team. The clinic ended just in time for her to shift her attention toward the upcoming season for the Thunderbirds.
They are looking forward to an exciting season after a heartbreaking lost to Arizona Western Community College ended their season last year and cost them a trip to the regional playoffs.
Defeats such as that can incline one to do one of two things: give up or work harder-than-ever to prevent those setbacks.
The decision for the team of this year was already made clear by Coach Melfy. She said her primary goal for this season was to make it to the playoffs.
That goal will be sought after by numerous returning players from the 22-win team of last year.
Those players are Irene Bahe, Leah Calamity, Lynneya Issac – all three are products of Monument Valley High School – Katie Weiss, Erin Flynn, and Jazz Ferreira.
Adding on a few new recruits and the athletic skills of Pan American Games’ participant Michelle Amete will deepen a roster that will have the talent to go beyond just the playoffs.
