OPINIONSStudents have responsibility to choose the right classes
In the article about SB 1331 written by Danny Wenger and Heather Cutler in the February 21st edition of the Mesa Legend, Senator Thaver Verschoor is quoted as saying “I’ve always been a proponent of choice.” We don’t know how the student felt about choice for the student is not quoted.
If the student is also a proponent of choice, then he (or she) needs know that with choice also comes responsibility.
Responsibility for listening to the professors as they discuss the course content, responsibility for doing research into what the course will entail and for talking to others who have taken the course, for reading the course outline and competencies available online. In other words to make sure the course is something the student would be interested in taking, prior to drop-add.
However, the real question in this case is this: should the state legislature be in the business of developing curriculum for Arizona’s schools.
I believe the educational system in Arizona is very capable of doing that own its own.
