MCC thrower wins two titles at indoor championships

The MCC men’s and women’s track teams have always had great success and it seems to be continuing this season as both teams are coming off strong performances at the NJCAA Indoor Championships.
The event was held on March 4 in Manhattan, Kan., at Kansas State University. With 20 events scored, the women finished eighth overall while the men took tenth.
Top performers for the women included sophomore Shaina Frost, who finished third overall in the women’s pole vault and Michelle Amete, who continued her successful collegiate career by placing second in the shot put and winning the weight throw competition on her last throw with a distance of 17.64 meters.
For the men, it was Logan Carton, who had a strong effort to capture fourth place in the men’s pole vault and Rashaud Scott, who had a dominant day all-around by winning the shot put and weight throw competitions.
Scott, a freshman, had a distance of 17.10 meters in the shot put and 18.84 meters in the weight throw, which came on his first throw in the event. He won both events by more than a meter.
Head coach Steve Jacobs was pleased with his teams’ performance in Kansas and hopes his younger athletes can learn from the experience saying, “Hopefully this will teach the young players how to compete in a big meet.”
Jacobs was also extremely impressed by the performances by Amete and Scott and commented, “What can you say, (Scott) is a double National Champion.”
The Thunderbirds then moved to the outdoors less than a week later on March 9 to partake in the Arizona Relays and Multi-Events which were held at Central Arizona College in Coolidge.
This was the second outdoor meet for MCC on the season, as they now only have outdoor meets the rest of the year.
It was followed up by the Willie Williams Classic and Dave Murray Distance Carnival at the U of A.
MCC competed against several major colleges such as the U of A, Washington State, BYU and Utah State.
Yet, the T-Birds managed to hold their own, in what was obviously a tough meet.
Amber Washington finished eighth for the women’s squad in the long jump and Amete had another strong showing, placing second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw.
On the men’s side it was Logan Carton finishing 12th in the pole vault and Kevin Lampkins with a strong ninth place finish in the long jump.
“(The meet) was ok, conditions were bad, it was windy and hard to get good times, overall we did ok as a team,” Jacobs said.
The track teams have five meets scheduled before MCC hosts the NJCAA Region I Championships on May 2, at John Riggs Stadium.
One of those meets is the annual Mesa Classic, which is also hosted by MCC. It is set to take place at 1 p.m. on April 14.
