Spotlight

A Rabbi, an Imam and a Christian

The Center for Global Tolerance is sponsoring a discussion between a panel of three different religious leaders from the community and others who choose to attend. Paul Eppinger, the executive director for the Arizona Interfaith Movement will also attend. The topic for this event will be building an understanding and “engagement” between traditions. Current events clearly paint a picture of a world divided on beliefs. This is a discussion for those who wish to join others who are willing to go beyond the cartoons and politics and not just coexist, but become friends. There will be a brainstorm addressing what everyone can do to improve the dialogue between people of different religions. Elizabeth Ursic, a professor of philosophy and religious studies at Mesa Community College said Christianity, Islam and Judaism have similarities and this has caused the conflict. The goal for education is not just to excel in mathematics or Comp 101, but to become open to other cultures as well. Patrice Nango, a philosophy and religious studies professor said the “bridges” that have been torn down between different faiths must be rebuilt. That is the purpose of the event. “Its important not to focus on the past but to work toward the future,” Nango said. The conversation will be on the first floor of the Paul A. Elsner Library on April 17,s in Room LB145 from noon - 2 p.m. There will be light refreshments and anyone is welcome.
