Needs still great in Katrina’s aftermath

Since hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, aid has been pouring in all over the country and MCC has been no exception.
Students and faculty members alike have been very generous, according to Judith Taussig, the school’s dean of student affairs.
Bill DeHaan of the Information Technology Department came up with the idea of making baskets to raffle off.
Each of these baskets would be made by different departments at MCC such as P.E., Personnel, Maintenance, and others.
Each department tried to theme their baskets according to their specific departments.
For instance the I.T. Department made what they called a “geek” basket, while maintenance put together a basket of tools, Taussig said.
Tickets for these baskets were sold Sept. 19 through 22, and during those dates. They sold 2,200 $1 tickets.
“I would say that each of these baskets were worth over $200 apiece,” Taussig said.
All together these baskets raised $2,859 for relief, according to Deb DeVore, the assistant director of Development at MCC.
One student anonymously donated five brand new backpacks with some snack foods inside, according to Taussig.
The very same student donated a bunch of diapers and diaper wipes as well, Taussig said.
A student, who is a mother as well as an evacuee, came to Taussig for help and Taussig was able to give her the diapers.
The student and Taussig both were surprised to find out that the diapers were the exact size she needed, Taussig said.
According to Taussig, books and stuffed toys have been donated as well.
Anything that is donated and not used will be sent to the Salvation Army, Taussig said.
