T-Birds look for success with team effort, unity

Unity and effort; that’s what Mesa’s cross country team member Au Nguyen says will be the key ingredients for a successful season. Nguyen, a returning sophomore this year, says he’s looking forward to a rewarding season. “As long as the team is on the same page and we have unity, we can have a great season,” said Nguyen.
Coach Clyde Resendez has high hopes for his team. “We have some students who are returning as sophomores this year who will contribute a lot to the team,” Resendez said. “It’s hard to say who our key team members are right now, but overall we have a great team and everyone is working really hard to put forth their best for this season.”

One thing the team would like to do is improve on the girls’ placement in nationals; last year they placed 10th. “This season I think we have a lot stronger team who is committed and we’re coming out more. Our goal is to make it to nationals this year and do well,” Emily Hartman, a returning sophomore, said. “I’d also like to see the boys make it to nationals this year since we were only 3 points away last season,” Resendez added.

Another highlight noted by Resendez to look forward to was assistant coach Anthony Damiani’s involvement with the half marathon. “He’s a contender for the Top 5 in the half marathon,” Resendez noted. Damiani is an alumni of Mesa Community College.

Resendez also added that staying hydrated was essential for the team. “Drinking plenty of water is important. It’s different for everyone, but usually the team members drink a gallon of water.”

In addition to intense practice in the summer heat on weekdays, Resendez also said that support from the school and fans contributed to the team’s drive. “We always love support from the school. Everyone is welcome to come see us.”

The team’s home is at the corner of Dobson and the 202 at Riverview. The team and coaches encourage those interested in watching them compete to check their website at the MCC athletics page for dates and times, as the page is updated regularly. “We’re also hosting a conference race on Sept. 22. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to come support us and watch,” Resendez said.

The Thunderbirds hope to find victory at their first meet at the George Kyte Invitational at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff.
