Sprinter chases more records
Amber Washington is not letting the fact that MCC’s women’s track team is small in numbers this season bother her.
She is still out to prove that she has the ability to turn heads.
“Initially, I got into track to stay in shape, but now, track is my life. I eat, sleep, and breathe track. It gives me something to be dedicated to. It builds character. I am really hoping to earn an athletic scholarship by the end of the season to a Division I school out of state,” said Washington.
Washington took a big step towards that goal by setting the school record in the 400 meter dash at a meet at NAU. Her coaches believe she can break more records.
“It is definitely reassuring to have the support of my coach as well as my fellow teammates,” Washington proclaimed.
Interestingly enough, last season Washington’s strongest events were the long jump and triple long jump.
Because she received a stress fracture in her foot, she had to sit out for part of last season.
The injury to her foot forced her to set aside her jumping events and focus on sprinting.
“Everything happens for a reason. I feel that good has the ability to come out of any unfortunate situation.”
It is that positive attitude, said her coach Ronnie Williams, that makes her a positive role model for her teammates.
“She is always upbeat and very encouraging. She never has any attitude when we ask her to do anything,” said Williams.
