Help slow down global warming
Laurie David, a global warming activist and producer of “An Inconvenient Truth,” once said, “No one can do everything but everyone can do something.”
This quote fits perfectly for those who want to help fight global warming but don’t have $30,000 in their back pocket to buy a hybrid car or a million dollars to donate toward environmental research.
Forunately, there are simple solutions that anyone can participat in that will have an impact on our atmosphere.
Time magazine and Glamour magazines, both put together a list of things everyone can do that will help slow down the global warming process.
Below is a list of nine solutions that can be done at home and in everyday life that can make a better future for the next generations.
• Change light bulbs to compact florescent light bulbs and they will use about 65 percent less energy than regular light bulbs.
• Dry clothing on a clothing line. Pretty easy to do in Arizona since it’s sunny two thirds of the year. By drying clothes on a clothes line, carbon dioxide produced by washers and dryers is reduced by 90 percent.
• Ride the bus, or better yet, a bicycle. Using public tranportation or riding a bicycle saves an estimated 1.4 billion gallons of gas annually, which translates to about 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide not polluting the atmosphere.
• Pay bills online. By paying bills online, solid waste is cut by 1.6 billion tons a year and greenhouse emissions are curbed by 2.1 million tons a year.
• Open a window. Opening a window instead of using air conditioning causes 4,000 fewer pounds of carbon dioxide released in the air.
• Use cloth bags over plastic bags. Most people don’t know that onhly about 3 percent of all plastic bags end up being recycled each year and it takes at least 1,000 years for those bags to biodegrade.
• Support local farmer’s markets. Fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products produced locally use less petroleum miles than imported goods.
• Shut off computers when not home. By shutting off computers a few hours a day, $70 a year can be saved on the electricity bill and carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 83 percent.
• Buy eco-friendly beauty products. Most eco-friendly beauty products are made without the use of pesticides so nothing bad seeps into the soil.
Taking the time and effort to actually try these solutions will greatly increase the chance for a better environment for generationd to come.
