No competition: ASMCC election has 1 candidate

There was only one candidate running in the election for student government; that is, one candidate in total, counting all positions. Betty Jo Lenhart, the current ASMCC Executive Vice President, is running for ASMCC President. ASMCC held elections on April 11 by paper ballot in front of the clock tower during the Spring Fling event.
The election process returned to paper ballot votes instead of laptops, which were used last year. Even though Lenhart was the only person running, students were still able to vote and run for an open office position on April 11.
According to Bryce Allen, communications affiliate to ASMCC, a lack of information put out by the current student government along with a lack of interest, contributed to ASMCC’s empty application box.
At the end of the semester, a governing board will select students for office positions. Students who are still interested in applying but missed the initial application and campaign period will have the opportunity from now to the end of the semester to apply, said Allen.
From there, ASMCC advisers will help select the new student government board members. Aside from ASMCC President, other positions open for next year are Executive Vice President, Vice President of Communications, and Vice President of Fiscal Affairs. ASMCC also oversees a student court. Five ASMCC Students are appointed by the President. Other commission positions in ASMCC include ten commissioner positions: Clubs, Thunderbird, Judicial, Publicity, Satellite, Night, Academics, Web, Historian and Student Services. Availability of the commissioner positions will be known at the end of the year.
A majority of this year’s ASMCC’s members were selected by ASMCC advisers after the official election period ended last year.
In an attempt to gauge more interest in the election process and hopes of garnering more student interest in student government, ASMCC held election day also as a celebration for the end of the year accomplishments.
“We were able to catch student’s attention with our festivities going on,” said Allen.
“But hopefully, we can get more students interested in running for office positions and become more involved with school.”
