OPINIONS

Is it my space, your space, or view space?

“My name is Ashley Parker, but some call me Ash. I like long romantic walks on the beach and my best friends are Meagan and Sabrina. Boys just love us because we have so much fun together, and if you don’t believe me check out my pics.” Sound familiar?
That’s just one of the millions of profiles on myspace.com.
More people are becoming familiar with the website, and to my knowledge, it is not just young people using it.
But who is really watching and enjoying the videos and comments on “your” space. Could this be a trap from Tom, just to view the majority of people in the United States, or is this a form of addicting self advertisement that everyone should take advantage of? Some say the advantage of myspace.com is simply communication.
Maybe that’s true, but sometimes I find that very hard to believe when all I hear when people take a photograph is “This is a myspace picture.”
People - get real, if is just for communication then why pictures, why a self description? I had no idea people were so self indulgent or up for sale until I started reading profiles on myspace.com.
My advice to people with a myspace is gather facts. Know that it is on the internet, and even though you think you have a private account, I’ll bet you the people who invented myspace.com are computer geniuses. What makes you think they don’t know their way around it?
I asked my friends how do you delete a myspace account; most of them said I don’t know or you can’t delete it. Once you are a myspacer, always a myspacer.
The truth is unfortunately myspace.com has brought a lot of controversy and problems with people who have a great resume and a degree and are not getting jobs because of their my space accounts. We all love ourselves, why not?
We want people to know that we are fun, crazy and energetic. But do you want your boss to know about your wild times, and who your friends are?
I know I’m keeping my identity and my portfolio pictures outside the internet world for now. Sure everyone is doing it, but why not?
Correction - people who have no careers or people too young to have a career are doing it. The surprise of not getting a job comes after the wild parties, almost naked pictures, and great descriptions. So good luck, hot stuff.
